Chief of Staff, National Armed Forces of the Republic of Latvia
Major General Georgs Kerlins serves as the Deputy Chief of Defence and Chief of Staff of the Joint Headquarters of the Latvian National Armed Forces. He began his military service in 1992 and has since held a wide range of leadership roles across Latvia's armed forces and international operations.
His career includes command of the 1st Infantry Battalion (LATBAT), key positions at the Latvian National Defence Academy, where he later served as Rector, and senior operational roles at the Joint Headquarters. Internationally, he has contributed to missions in the Balkans and Iraq, and served as Latvia’s military representative to NATO’s Allied Command Operations.
A graduate of the Latvian National Defence Academy and the Baltic Defence College, Major General Kerlins holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and has completed multiple command and staff courses. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2025.
He is married and has two sons. In addition to Latvian, he speaks English and Russian.
