PRESENTATION. Responding to Russian disinformation: lessons learned from the Salisbury incident

Conference room A

In March 2018 former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal was poisoned with an illegal nerve agent. The only credible conclusion was that the Russian State was behind it, and serving Russian military intelligence officers were identified as culpable. While the UK government was focused on the careful exposure of facts about the incident and protection of the public, dozens of fake stories concerning the perpetrators and motivations behind the poisoning circulated the web – many directly planted by the Russian State’s news outlets. This session will discuss the communications lessons learned during such a tense moment in international politics and how this incident can shed light on how to measure and assess impact of disinformation. This session is organised in cooperation with the UK Government Communications Service.
